A lot of people ask me what the difference is between Community Solar and the "Clean Energy" fliers they get in the mail.
The difference is that what's referred to as Clean Energy in these fliers are being sold by Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) not local farmers. This usually means you have to read the fine print to really get at the bottom line.
When you read the fine print you will often find that what they count as Clean Energy refers to wind farms in Texas which feed into the local energy grid in Texas. If you don't believe me, ask them to tell you the specific energy project you receive your energy from. They won't be able to tell you.

Yeah I got a flier from a company called Clean Choice Energy. After reading this blog I tried to read the fine print. You’re right ! There in black and white in the fine print is their clause which says that they can source clean energy anywhere in the US. I’m a grad student and I like the idea of keeping the money in the local community.
